Charles J. Newling
Charlie is a Professional Wetland Scientist and a Certified Wildlife Biologist. He received a B.A. in Biology in 1971 from St. Mary’s College in Winona, MN writing a thesis on waterfowl use of Mississippi River backwater wetlands. He received his M.S. in Wildlife Ecology in 1975 from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale which included research on both wild turkeys and bobwhite quail. From 1975 through 1978 he worked as an Environmental Resource Specialist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New England Division supporting its wetland regulatory program and from 1978 through 1989 as a Wildlife Biologist conducting research and technology transfer for the Corps’ Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg, MS. As part of that latter job, he served from 1981 through 1989 as the Technical Coordinator for the Corps’ internal wetland training program nationally.
Leaving federal service in 1989, Charlie co-founded Wetland Science Applications, Inc., a private sector consulting firm, and the Wetland Training Institute, Inc., a firm that provides intensive, professional level, short courses designed for consultants and public sector agency staff.
Charlie continues to work in wetlands and other wildlife habitats all over the United States participating in consulting projects and conducting a variety of wetland related short courses. However, when he’s not on the road, Charlie enjoys spending time at his home outside of Briggsville, WI hunting, fishing, and botanizing. Charlie joined the STCP Board in 2013.
